In this exhibition, students from AKI Moving Image are working on a project about Expanded Cinema. This term describes a film, video, multimedia presentation, or immersive environment that pushes the boundaries of cinema and the traditional (one-way) relationship between audience and screen.

In Blue Light District, moving image students are working on a project about Expanded Cinema. This term describes a film, video, multimedia presentation, or immersive environment that pushes the boundaries of cinema and rejects the traditional one-way relationship between audience and screen. During this project, AKI students are creating a multichannel video installation or performance.
Extended cinema has a number of characteristics that are being explored by the students, such as a non-linear narrative approach and multi-screen editing. They are experimenting with spatial installation, time-space concepts, interaction, and movement. Finally, the gaze is an important component: the gaze is a critical awareness of perspective: who is looking, who is being looked at, and what power dynamics or cultural frameworks are embedded in that gaze.
