ArtEZ x Phion Symphony Orchestra: the best of Brahms

Composer Johannes Brahms is the focus of the Phion Festival from 12 – 22 March at Musis & Stadstheater Arnhem and Muziekcentrum Enschede.

Students and lecturers from ArtEZ Academy of Music in Zwolle are working closely with musicians from Phion Symphony Orchestra to bring you the very best of Brahms. 

The bachelor’s programme Composition for Film and Theatre in Arnhem will also be represented at the festival by both students and lecturers. Main subject lecturer in Composition, Aftab Darvishi, is composer-in-residence at the Phion Symphony Orchestra.

This collaboration offers students an exceptional opportunity to gain intensive practical experience and prepare for a versatile professional career.

Where to hear ArtEZ at the Phion Festival

Lecturers and students from the bachelor’s programme Classical Music and the Master of Music in Zwolle will perform in the following festival programmes.

  • Intermezzi Marathon
    ArtEZ pianists perform Brahms’ late piano works.
    Friday 13 March in Arnhem and Friday 20 March in Enschede.
     
  • ArtEZ Voices: Brahms Lieder
    Vocalists from the preparatory programme, bachelor’s programme and master’s programme Klassieke Muziek (Classical Music) present a joint recital led by Marjan Kuiper, with pianist Pieter Bogaert.
    The programme includes Liebeslieder Walzer and music from Ein Deutsches Requiem.
    Saturday 21 March in Enschede and Sunday 22 March in Arnhem.
     
  • ArtEZ Labs: Beyond Brahms
    In this special edition of ArtEZ Labs, master’s students from the Master of Music present a distinctive and research-driven take on Brahms.
    Saturday 14 and Sunday 22 March in Arnhem.
    Sunday 15 and Saturday 21 March in Enschede.
     
  • Festival Orchestra: Brahms Symphony No. 4
    ArtEZ students join forces with musicians from Phion to form a special project orchestra. Conducted by Joost Smeets, they perform Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.
    Saturday 21 March in Enschede and Sunday 22 March in Arnhem.
