Music Therapy in Medical Settings

About the seminar

This seminar introduces students to medical music therapy and the coursework that informs the use of music therapy treatment strategies within inpatient populations as part of an interdisciplinary team of providers. 

Participants will gain critical insight into the evolving healthcare landscape as it relates to medical music therapy, alongside a deeper understanding of current literature in the field.

This seminar is designed for graduate music therapy students (master’s level) and professional music therapists (PhD students are considered as professionals).

Course contents

Day 1 — Intro to Medical Music Therapy and Arts in Medicine

  • Introduction: Setting the need and rationale (stress relief, pain and anxiety reduction, mental health support, coping, and community building).
  • Arts in Medicine: Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Dance and Movement Therapy, Music Medicine, and Art Applications.

     

Day 2 — Integration Strategies and Vignettes

  • Integration Strategies: Program design, clinical components, academic considerations, research development, and community integration.
  • Vignettes: Case examples from patient, family, staff, community, and administrative perspectives.

     

Day 3 — Leading through Art and Finale

  • Leading through Art: The artist as leader, communication, sharing vision, and moving forward through creativity.
  • Finale: Key takeaways, next steps, and your call to action.
