The Master Illustration Based Narrative at ArtEZ Academy of Art & Design in Arnhem is currently looking for a  

Lecturer Illustration (0.2 FTE, 8 hours a week) 

 

with a passion for narrative practices and visual storytelling. This role supports Master's students in strengthening their illustrative power, developing autonomous illustration research practices and articulating their artistic vision through image.  

 

What will you do? 

  • You deliver group classes at Master's level that emphasize narrative illustration and visual research-oriented practice.  

  • You coach and support students in advancing their personal research projects, helping them explore questions that move them and develop work that is both visually compelling and conceptually rich.  

  • You encourage students to expand their illustrative power, deepen their technical and investigative skills and engage critically with the wider contexts of their work.  

  • You participate in program meetings and collaborate with the Head of the Master's program and the teaching team to support the ongoing development of the curriculum. 

 

Who we are 

The Master Illustration Based Narrative program at ArtEZ is an international, research-driven illustrative Master's that places a personal research project at the core of its curriculum. Students explore their own questions through both visual practice and conceptual inquiry, taking modules that strengthen narrative ability, technical confidence, and an investigative attitude in relation to the world around them.  

This Master’s program is designed for students who want to use drawing and image-making to tell meaningful stories, make viewpoints visible, and open up new perspectives-whether from artistic, theoretical, journalistic or socially engaged angles.  

 

What do you bring? 

  • You have substantial professional experience as an illustrator, or artist who works with drawing at the core of your work, whose work foregrounds narrative.  

  • You have experience teaching at Master's or postgraduate level in art, design or related creative fields.  

  • You are skilled in guiding students through independent research projects and helping them articulate their practice conceptually, technically and visually.  

  • You enjoy working with an international cohort of students with diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds. 

  • You are proactive, organized, and able to manage preparation, feedback and assessment in a timely and thoughtful way. You are committed to being part of a starting teaching team and contributing to the ongoing development of the Master's program and like pioneering. 

  • You live in the Netherlands or within commuting distance of Arnhem. 

  • Your English is excellent in both spoken and written communication. 

 

What do we offer?  

We offer a temporarily contract for 1 year of 0,2 FTE. In case of good performance, your contract can be extended. The gross monthly salary is at least €4.632,17 and at most € 6.677,44 (Docent B, scale 11) based on a 36-hour working week. In addition to an informal and open working atmosphere, we offer attractive employment conditions according to the collective labor agreement for higher professional education CAO-HBO.
